HATEBREED Guitarist: 'We Look At SLAYER As Our Role Models'
July 5, 2007Finland's HardcoreSounds.Net recently conducted an interview with HATEBREED guitarist Sean Martin. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow:
HardcoreSounds.Net: "Supremacy" was released through Roadrunner Records. How has the cooperation between you and them been so far?
Sean Martin: A label is always a label. It really doesn't matter for us. We have been on three different labels and we look at HATEBREED more as an institution. The label is just something to put the record out. It's more between us and our fans. We always get along with our labels. It's not a problem for us.
HardcoreSounds.Net: As a hardcore band which one do you prefer more, a club gig or a festival show?
Sean Martin: I like them all. For me the club gigs are a little better. We really like the atmosphere. We are from the hardcore scene so that's our home. People stage diving and going nuts. On festivals you have the chance to play for more people so it's equally as awesome but in a different way.
HardcoreSounds.Net: On festivals you will reach new audience each night.
Sean Martin: Exactly. There are always people who haven't ever heard of us before. They see us and hopefully we gain new fans. Usually when playing in a club there's only our true followers.
HardcoreSounds.Net: You have been together for 14 years now. What do you see as the main reason for such a long-lasting career in hardcore scene?
Sean Martin: I think it's just our passion and our love for the music we make. And the fact that we all feel blessed to be able to do what we do for a living. It has been everyone's dream to do this so we really happy to have the chance to tour the world and to see awesome new places. We are still doing it after 14 years and we ain't gonna stop anytime soon. We are honored to be a part of the music scene. We look at SLAYER as our role models and they have been together for 20-plus years. MOTÖRHEAD has been together for 40 years now. We want to be just like that.
HardcoreSounds.Net: What's the worst thing while being on tour?
Sean Martin: Nothing really. I don't have anything home to keep me, like, wondering, you know. Touring is my life. I miss my dog at home so let's name it as the worst thing. I have a 15-year old pitbull and I have had it since I was a kid. Even though it's corny, I miss it.
HardcoreSounds.Net: "Supremacy" was released in 2006. When can we maybe expect a new album from HATEBREED?
Sean Martin: Not for awhile. We are going to tour with this album through the beginning of 2008. Then we are going to take a little bit of time off and maybe handle some home business. After that we are going to get a great producer and write a great album. I don't think that we are going to rush things. There isn't any point to put out an album without our hearts in it.
HardcoreSounds.Net: After these European shows the next thing for you is Ozzfest. What are you expecting from the tour?
Sean Martin: In the States that's the biggest festival. In European countries summer festivals are a tradition but it's a weekend thing. In America all we have is Ozzfest metal-wise. We are honored to be a part of it. We are headlining the second stage this year which is really awesome. Hopefully the tour will be a blast.
HardcoreSounds.Net: Let's get into your live memories. Which show has been the most memorable to you?
Sean Martin: The most memorable gig to me was Download festival last year. There were like 70,000 people. A fact that a hardcore band from Connecticut which is a very small state in America achieved that level to be asked to play the main stage at Download festival, that's the crowning achievement of my life so far.
HardcoreSounds.Net: What's your opinion about the so called "emo" scene which seems to be rather big in U.S.?
Sean Martin: I don't have anything against it. I am a music fan and I am actually friends with a lot of those guys. We don't look down on anybody. Everyone has a right to express themselves musically and if that's their way to do it, so be it.
